Some twenty-first century Americans, Christians and non-Christians, are misinterpreting God’s Holy Scripture, the Bible. Whether they read the Bible that came from England with America’s first colonists or they read the newly written Bibles that have been written in more recent times, Americans are failing to truly understand what the scriptures are attempting to say to them. Post-modernism and the effects of America’s modern culture wars have caused some Americans to read the Bible with blurred vision. They do not interpret the Bible in the manner that God intended. Instead, they put their own slant on the interpretation. As a result, their personal interpretation permits them to do abominable sins that are contrary to the teachings of God and His Only Begotten Son Jesus Christ. Therefore, their misinterpretation of the scriptures in the Bible might just be responsible for their spiritual and possibly their physical destruction now and in the future.
The apparent lack of understanding of two scriptures in the Bible is the underlying reasons for misinterpreting the explicit Word of God. According to II Timothy 3:16-17, the Apostle Paul states, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Clearly, God and the Holy Spirit are responsible for the writing of the Bible, not any ungodly man who lives on the earth today. The other key scripture is found in Deuteronomy 12:32. It states, “Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it.” Therefore, the commandments of God should be carried out to the fullest. However, too many people are failing to follow God’s commandments. They are adding their own interpretations to God’s Holy Word in order to legitimize their sinful lifestyles. As a result, it is these misinterpretations of Holy Scriptures that will hold them accountable to God. In fact, in Galatians 1:9, God has promised that a curse would be placed on those who promote His Word incorrectly. It reads, “If anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.”
There are two main cultural issues that are clearly condemned by God. They are abortion and homosexuality. However, in post-modern America, these two cultural issues are being promoted as acceptable for anyone to do. But, according to the true interpretation of God’s Word, they are not. In fact, there are many scriptures throughout the Old Testament and New Testament that present a different picture from what some post-modern Americans paint, whether it is direct scriptures or inferred scriptures. Therefore, those who purport that abortion and homosexuality are acceptable to God are definitely misinterpreting the scriptures that God purposefully placed in the Bible for the post-modern world several thousand years ago.
What does the Bible say about abortion? There are no scriptures in the Bible that directly mention abortion. However, there are many scriptures that infer that abortion is not acceptable to God. Some of the more noted scriptures actually discuss the condition of the unborn baby in the mother’s womb:
Psalms 139:13-16-For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
Jeremiah 1:5-Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.
Luke 1:15-For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
Therefore, it is inferred in these scriptures that God promotes the “sanctity of life,” even while unborn babies are in their mother’s womb. If David, Jeremiah, and John the Baptist had been aborted, there would have been some meaningful Biblical heroics that would never have happened. In fact, since Mary, Jesus’ mother, was so young and was not married, she probably could have gotten an abortion, too. Of course, if Mary had gotten an abortion, Jesus would not have been born. If Jesus had not been born, mankind would not have had a way to escape his sins and to stay out of an eternal damnation in Hell. Also, how many of the unborn babies that have been aborted since Roe vs. Wade might have developed a cure for some deadly disease, such as cancer or AIDS? Ultimately, in the abortion debauchery, God is the Creator of Life. As a result, He and only He should have the right to decide when death should replace life. However, God does give mankind the right to take another life for self-defense, such as taking a baby’s life in order to save the mother’s life. But, taking an unborn baby’s life just because of an unwanted pregnancy brought about by promiscuity or the inconvenience that it might cause a working parent does not come under this category.
What does the Bible say about homosexuality? The Bible makes many negative statements about homosexuality. In fact, there are too many scriptures that condemn homosexuality as a sin, whether in the Old Testament or the New Testament. But, those who favor this sexual orientation refuse to accept what the Bible has to say about homosexuality. Instead, they misinterpret Biblical scriptures in order to legitimize their sinful lifestyle. However, let the following scriptures written in God’s Holy Word, not just the opinion of heterosexuals, become the standard bearer for judging whether homosexuality is acceptable to God. Some noteworthy scriptures are:
Leviticus 18:22-Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
Romans 1: 26-27-For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
I Corinthians 6: 9-10-Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
As stated in these scriptures, God and His prophets definitely show a disdain for homosexuality. In fact, it cannot be made any clearer that homosexuality is not acceptable to God. But, those who promote homosexuality still insist on misinterpreting God’s Holy Scriptures in order to prove that they are correct in their assumptions.
However, the scriptures found in Genesis 1:26-27 and Genesis 2:21-24 state without a doubt God’s intentions toward mankind’s sexuality. Genesis 1:26-27 reads as follows:
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Therefore, as is so explicitly stated, God created male and female in the image of God. If His intentions were to have male and female, male and male, and women and women, He would have had it inserted in the Bible at this point. Also, Genesis 2:21-24 further reinforces the fact that God definitely intended there to be one type of sexuality. Genesis 2:21-24 reads as follows:
21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Once again, if God intended for homosexuality to be a viable and accepted sexual orientation, He would have inserted it here, and He would have stated that mankind could choose between a male partner or a female partner. But, He didn’t!
In conclusion, abortion and homosexuality are two ongoing cultural issues in America’s cultural war. However, many Americans are failing to consider God’s perspective on these issues. Apparently, they are misinterpreting two key scriptures that clearly state God’s viewpoint on all rebellion against Him that is occurring all over the world. These two scriptures are II Samuel 12:9 and Romans 1:18. II Samuel 12:9 reads, “Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight?” Romans 1:18 reads, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.” From these two scriptures, it is evident that God does not approve of continual sin and rebellion toward Him and His Son Jesus Christ, including abortion and homosexuality. In fact, even though God is a loving Creator, He would eventually send His wrath upon all nations and peoples that disobey His commandments.
Therefore, it might just be possible that God’s wrath is being directed toward America and the rest of the world in the year A.D. 2009. As everyone knows, one sure fire way to get a person’s attention is to get into his or her wallet or pocketbook. Apparently, this is exactly what God is attempting to do in the United States. As a result of America’s sin and rebellion against God’s commandments, God’s wrath might just require individual Americans to pay a high price in the realm of personal economics. Also, the corporate world is suffering economically because of its sins of greed and unethical business practices.
But, as Jonathan Edwards expressed it in his famous sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” sinners who fall into the hands of an angry God can expect to face some type of God’s judgment. The deep economic recession that is affecting the United States and the world could very well be associated with God’s judgment on the world for its years and years of disobedience to Him. If this is true, it will not matter who the President of the United States is. Also, it will not matter how much money the government pumps into the economy. The only thing that will matter is whether or not Americans finally see the handwriting on the wall and ultimately ask for individual and collective forgiveness from God. Then, as II Chronicles 7:14 so aptly expresses it, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” However, in order for this to happen in America, another Great Awakening (a national revival) must occur. Of course, this might not be able to happen if post-modern Americans continue to disobey God’s commandments and misinterpret His Holy Scriptures.
