ADF attorneys offer to defend Ga. town against legal challenge to nativity scene
DALLAS, Ga. — Alliance Defense Fund attorneys have offered to defend the town of Dallas free of charge on the heels of legal threats that demanded removal of a nativity display from a public street in the Georgia town. Americans United for Separation of Church and State sent a letter to city officials claiming that the presence of the nativity scene is “violating the Constitution.”
“The attacks on Christmas are simply part of a larger war being waged on anything and everything Christian,” said ADF Senior Legal Counsel David Cortman. “The American people, common sense, and the Constitution are clearly winning the battles against Christmas waged by the Left. Unfortunately, the misguided belief that we must sanitize Christmas to keep from offending a small segment of the population still exists.”
“This group has been very vocal in its denial of Christmas censorship, yet has launched this very public attack on Christmas,” Cortman added.
In a letter to the mayor and council of the town of Dallas dated Dec. 4, Americans United for Separation of Church claimed that a crèche standing two blocks from city hall, on Main Street, is “an endorsement of religion” and must be removed immediately. A copy of the letter is available at www.telladf.org/UserDocs/AULetter.pdf.
On Dec. 12, ADF attorneys sent an informational letter to Dallas officials clarifying the law and confirming the constitutionality of the display. ADF also offered to represent the city against any legal challenge by Americans United or any other outside group that challenges the display in court. The letter may be read at www.telladf.org/UserDocs/AULetterResponse.pdf.
“ADF will continue to protect the right to publicly celebrate Christmas as well as other constitutionally-protected religious liberties that are attacked,” Cortman said.
ADF is a legal alliance defending the right to hear and speak the Truth through strategy, training, funding, and litigation.
